Coin Collection Value: Where We Go Wrong

Did you know that we may be reducing the value of our coins without our knowledge? Below are some things that we could be doing to devalue our coin collection.

1. Frequent touching

It is normal to be proud of our silver bullion collection and to want to show it off. However, doing so can result in the coins getting scratches or discolored. Our fingers may have micro particles and oils that react with the metals causing them to damage. Washing hands prior to handling the coins and touching only the edges is the way out.

2. Polishing

Polishing or cleaning gold bullion in an attempt to keep them shiny may have the opposite effect. Cleaning will strip the toning off the coins and hence they will lose their luster as well as their value.

3. Poor Storage

Coins stored in places such as cheap plastic containers, cardboard boxes, or paper envelopes are a wrong move. These options of storage eventually break down releasing by-products that react with the coins. The chemicals that are produced can damage or tarnish coins. We need to store coins in containers that are acid-free or high quality plastic containers.

The best way to preserve the value is to keep them in their original mint issued holders when we buy gold or any other precious metal coins. We need to resist the temptation to break the seal to ensure the coins will remain flawless, clean, and valuable.
